The majority of commercial hybrids have been bred to meet certain criteria, usually heavy yields, size and shape – often foregoing that real tomato taste.  It is understandable that the breeders have to take this route due to the financial commercial pressures in producing as many kilos as they can per square metre.

Heirloom tomatoes, usually varieties that have been produced for over 50 years and pure bred, are now enjoying a renaissance period – mostly due to their superb tastes and flavours.
